Do You Have a Sense of Humor?
Humor and laughter are good for us. These is increasing evidence that they can heal  us physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. In fact every system of the body  responds to laughter in some positive, healing way. So how can we get more laughter  into our lives ? 46 Psychologist and author, Steve Wilson, has some answers.
Many people believe that we are born with a sense of humor. They think, "either you've got it, or you don't" Dr. Wilson points out that this is false 47 The parts of the brain and central nervous system that control laughing and smiling  are mature at birth 48 (After all, when a baby laughs, we don't rush over and say. "That! kid has a great sense of humor!") A sense of humor is something that you can develop over a lifetime.
Sometimes people think that they don't have a good sense of humor because they are not good juke tellers. Dr. Wilson reminds us that telling jokes is only one of many ways to express humor. 49 Then we will make others laugh, too.
A person who has a true sense of humor is willing and able to see the funny side of everyday life. One of the best definitions of a sense of humor is " the ability to see the  non-serious element in a situation" .
Consider this sign from a story window. Any faulty merchandise will be cheerfully replaced with merchandise of equal quality. The store manager probably placed the sign in the window to impress customers with the store's excellent service 50 As Dr. Wilson says, "a good sense of humor means that you don't have to be funny, you just have to see what's funny"
A. What is true, however, is that we are born with the capacity to laugh and smile.
B. However, that does not mean that infants have a sense of humor.
C. He advises us to lose our inhibitions ( 抑制) and try to laugh at ourselves.
D. Is it possible to develop a sense of humor?
E. Everyone experiences this emotion.
F. He had a serious purpose, but if you have s sense of humor, you will probably find the sign funny!

C  Sleep Lets Brain File Memories
1    To sleep. Perchance to file? Findings published online this week by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences further support the theory that the brain organizes and stows memories formed during the day while the rest of the body is catching zzz's.
2    Gyorgy Buzsaki of Rutgers University5 and his colleagues analyzed the brain waves of sleeping rats and mice. Specifically, they examined the electrical activity emanating from the somatosensory neocortex (an area that processes sensory information) and the hippocampus, which is a center for learning and memory. The scientists found that oscillations in brain waves from the two regions appear to be intertwined. So-called sleep spindles (bursts of activity from the neocortex) were followed tens of milliseconds later by beats in the hippocampus known as ripples. The team posits that this interplay between the two brain regions is a key step in memory consolidation.
3    A second study, also published online this week by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, links age-associated memory decline to high glucose levels.
Previous research had shown that individuals with diabetes suffer from increased memory problems. In the new work, Antonio Convit of New York University School of Medicine and his collaborators studied 30 people whose average age was 69 to investigate whether sugar levels, which tend to increase with age, affect memory in healthy people as well. The scientists administered11 recall tests, brain scans and glucose tolerance tests, which measure how quickly sugar is absorbed from the blood by the body's tissues.
4    Subjects with the poorest memory recollection, the team discovered, also displayed the poorest glucose tolerance. In addition, their brain scans showed more hippocampus shrinkage than those of subjects better able to absorb blood sugar.
5 "Our study suggests that this impairment12 may contribute to the memory deficits13 that occur as people age." Convit says. "And it raises the intriguing possibility that improving glucose tolerance could reverse some age-associated problems in cognition.14" Exercise and weight control can help keep glucose levels in check15, so there may be one more reason to go to the gym.
Which of the following statements is nearest in meaning to the sentence "To sleep. Perchance to file?"?
A.Does brain arrange memories in useful order during sleep?
B.Does brain have memories when one is sleeping?
C.Does brain remember files after one falls asleep?
D.Does brain work on files in sleep?

Natural Medicine

Since earliest days, humans have used some kinds of medicines. We know this because humans have survived.Ancient treatments for injury and disease were successful enough to keep humans from dying out completely.
They were successful long before the time of modem medicine. Before the time of doctors with white coats and shiny(發(fā)亮的)instruments. Before the time of big hospitals with strange and wonderful equipment.
Many parts of the world still do not have university—educated doctors.Nor do they have expensive hospitals.Yet injuries are treated. And diseases are often cured, how?By ancient methods.By medicines that might seem mysterious, even magical(有魔力的).Traditional medicines are neither mysterious nor magical, however.
Through the centuries, tribal(部落的)medicine men experimented with plants. They found many useful chemicals in the plants. And scientists believe many of these traditional medicines may provide the cure for some of today’s’most serious diseases.
Experts say almost 80%of the people in the world use plants for health care. These natural medicines are used not just because people have no other form of treatment. They are used because people trust them.In developed areas, few people think about the source of the medicines they buy in a store.Yet many widely—used medicines are from ancient sources, especially plants. Some experts say more than 25%of modem medicines come,in one way or another, from nature.
Scientists have long known that nature is really a chemical factory. All living things contain chemicals that help them survive. So scientists’interest in traditional medicine is not new.But it has become an urgent concern. This is because the earth’s supply of natural medicines may be dropping rapidly.
根據(jù)以上內(nèi)容,回答題。

A.much more successful than modern ones
B.successful in all cases
C.successful enough for humans to survive
D.of little help to humans

What Makes Me the Weight I Am?
There's no easy answer to this question. Your genetic makeup, the physical traits thatget passed down to you from your parents, pays a big part in determining yoursize and weight.(46) But if your parents are small than average, you maywant to rethink that professional basketball career!
The same goes for your body type. Have you ever heard someone say a person is big boned? It's a way of saying the person has a large frame, or skeleton. Big bonesusually weigh more than small bones. (47)
Like your height or body type, your genes have to say about what your weight will be. Butthat's only part of the story. Being overweight can run in someone's family, but it may not because of their genes. (48) And even though some kidsgain weight more easily than others, when they eat right and exercise, mostkids can be a healthy and happy weight that's right for them, it's true -- theway you live can change the way you look.
How much you weigh is a balance between the calories you eat and the calories you use.(49) If you spend your free time watching TV, your body won't use as many calories as itwould if you played basketball, skated, or went for a walk. If you are inbalance, your weight will stay right for you as you know. But if you eat moreand exercise less, you may become overweight. (50)
A.That's why it's possible for two kids with the same height, but different weights.
B.If youeat more calories than your body needs to use, you will gain too much weight.
C.Pooreating and exercise habits also run in families and this may be the reason the membersof a family are overweight.
D.However, many overweight people have difficulty reaching their healthy bodyweight.
E. On theother hand, if you eat less and exercise more, you may lose weight.
F. If both your parents are fat, there is a good chance you' be fat.
